DRUM SCANNING

The high standard of drum scanning on our Heidelberg Tango and Screen Dainippon SG-8060P Mark II scanners allows us to capture exceptional tonality, dynamic range and shadow information in the negative that cannot be achieved on flatbed CCD scanners by wet scanning on an acrylic drum.

Drum scan clients receive a raw uncompressed 16-bit TIFF file with the option of additional dust removal and colour correction services. Drum scanning is by far the most time-consuming type of scanning, but the results that are possible are superior to any other digitisation method.

WHAT IS A DRUM SCANNER AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

1

The drum scanner works in a completely different way to the flatbed scanners, as it receives light analogue and instead of a sensor, it detects light through three channels (red, green, blue) captured by the PMT photo-amplifier. It is therefore an analogue transmission that receives its digital conversion only in the final stage, which means that the data capture eliminates noise and allows for exceptional colour accuracy, outstanding dynamic range and high resolution of the scanned material.

2

The highest high resolution of drum scanning allows for extremely high magnifications and printing from negatives, with the special feature of drum scanning that the negative is wet pressed against the substrate, making it perfectly sharp and with reduced grain.

3

A single drum scan can be larger than 2GB, but it is important to remember that the largest scan may not be the best. The scanner's job is to match the grain size to the resolution of the scan, as this is the only way to get the best result.

4

For drum scanning, cut single negatives are the best choice, as drum space is valuable and fixing unscanned negatives is time-consuming and expensive.

Did you know that a drum scan can capture details that regular scanners simply can't? More than the resolution of the final scan itself, the advantage of drum scanning lies in the dynamic range.

FLATBED SCANNING

For customers who want top quality scans but don't need drum scanning, the solution is a professional flatbed scanner, which can scan entire rolls of developed film and make a modern "contact print" of your negatives, among other things. The Screen Dainippon FTS-550 (Scitex Smart 342) is one of the best scanners for digitising material that can't be scanned on a drum scanner, because it captures the maximum possible nuance in your material using state-of-the-art optics.

Flatbed scanning subscribers receive an unprocessed, uncompressed 16-bit TIFF file with the option of additional dust removal and colour correction services. Please see the price list for details and we are available for any questions.

FRONTIER SCANNING

Fuji Frontier's professional system enables fast scanning of entire rolls of negatives, and we have modernised and customised our scanners so that we don't use automated photo enhancement tools, and we exploit the full resolution potential of the Frontier CCD sensor. Adjustments to the device have also allowed us to scan beyond the edge of the photo, giving the photos a special stamp, similar to printing in a darkroom.

Frontier scanning subscribers can opt for multiple scan resolutions, based on which you receive a raw uncompressed 16-bit TIFF file with the option of additional dust removal and colour correction services. Please see the price list for details and we are available for any questions.

REPHOTOGRAPHY STUDIO

Clients who want colour-calibrated and accurate digital reproductions of large-format artworks can turn to our studio photography services, where we use a large-format camera and a digital back with state-of-the-art optics to achieve outstanding results at ultra-high resolution. The type of lighting can be used to emphasise the plasticity of the images, or the surface can be lit from a different angle, resulting in a reproduction that looks flatter, less embossed, because of the different light incidence.

Please contact us to order rephotography services, as the price depends on both the organisational part of the shoot (in the studio, on location) and the desired final results.
